What is a Water Softener?
Whole-house water softeners and filters do exactly what it says on the tin: it softens and filters all of the water in your home. This type of reverse osmosis system usually consists of a tank with numerous layers of media, each having its own function.
Through reverse osmosis, a layer of activated carbon, an ion exchange resin layer, and a layer of specific gravel are common components of these water softener systems. The filtration and reverse osmosis section are made up of activated carbon and gravel layers, while the softer part is made up of resin. In addition to the media tank, there is a backwash tank where sodium or potassium chloride is used to clean the resin and allow it to continue working.
How Do Water Softeners Work?
Chlorine is one of the pollutants that activate carbon adsorbs. The pollutants become stuck in the tiny pores that encase the carbon granules.
The ion exchange resin bed is beneath the activated carbon. Ion exchange is the exchange of ions of the same charge between an insoluble solid and a solution in contact with it. Calcium and magnesium ions in the water entering the home are swapped for sodium or potassium ions bonded to resin beads in the case of water softening. Calcium and magnesium produce issues, whereas sodium and potassium do not.
For starters, because the chlorine and harsh water aren’t damaging your skin and hair, you’ll have softer skin and silkier hair. Because your skin won’t be as dry, you won’t need to use as much lotion each time you bathe, saving you money. With hard water, soap creates a curd rather than a lather, but it lathers easily with soft water.
A water softener’s primary function is to minimize scale buildup. This means you won’t have to spend hours washing your showers, sinks, and other surfaces to get rid of all the gunk. As a result, you’ll save money on cleaning supplies. You won’t need as much soap or detergent when washing with soft water, and you won’t need to buy cleaning solutions to eliminate scale buildup, making many aspects of your house much easier to clean.
Minerals of hardness accumulate inside pipelines and appliances, causing damage and inefficiency. Because chlorine dries out your appliances’ rubber parts, they may need to be replaced more frequently. A whole-house water softener and filter can help you avoid these issues.
Although the purpose of a water softener and filter extends beyond flavor, one of the most common reasons people choose water softener installation is to improve the taste of your drinking water. One of the advantages of a water softener and filter is that the water from every tap in your home will taste nicer. Additionally, meals and beverages prepared with softened and filtered water have a better flavor. Simply put, there’s no more need for bottled drinking water.
If you have hard water in your house, it could be costing you money. Because appliances that use hard water take more energy to function, your energy bill will be higher. You’ll also have to devote more effort to cleaning limescale buildup from your fixtures and appliances. The cost of cleaning supplies and cleansers required to remove the ugly residue can add up quickly. And, if the buildup on your plumbing, pipelines, and appliances continues to grow over time, it can cost you money in repairs and replacements.

Learning About San Diego Water Softener Alternatives
San Diego County homeowners have been turning to salt water softeners for many years to remove hardness from their water supply. Although salt water treatment systems offer a great way to soften your home’s water, there are many disadvantages to using a system like this.
These water systems require adding a large amount of salt to your water to remove the calcium and magnesium ions that cause hard water. Unfortunately, all of this sodium is then released back into San Diego’s water systems which are bad for the environment. Additionally, because a water softener system might require backflushing, you can end up wasting up to 15,000 gallons of water each year.
For these reasons, we highly recommend a salt water softener alternative called Nucleation Assisted Crystallization Water Conditioning.
